Call for competition  Breaking silence on violence against women and girls”

Within the framework of the «16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence» global campaign that runs from 25 November to 10 December each year and in conjuction with the UN Secretary-General’s UNITE to End Violence against Women and Girls campaign, the UN Women Country Office in Kyrgyzstan, Soros Foundation – Kyrgyzstan, Crisis Center “Sezim” in collaboration with Internews in the Kyrgyz Republic are organising a competition with a thematic focus on ending gender-based violence in all parts of Kyrgyzstan.

The competition is open to all citizens of Kyrgyzstan and is held in three categories: TV/radio; print media/internet outlets; and blogs/multimedia (photography, viral videos and audios, posters). All entries submitted to the competition should be published in a mass media outlet and/or social media with sufficient outreach.

Entries may cover all aspects and types of gender-based violence, and should contribute to greater public awareness and understanding on the issues of gender-based violence, as well as offer policy recommendations to relevant government bodies, NGOs and other organisations on how to prevent and end gender-based violence in the country. Stories of people who have experienced gender-based violence, particularly those that can set a precedent and hence urge public movement for positive change are particularly welcomed.

All entries in all categories should reflect the following UNiTE Campaign Orange Day Action Themes for 2017:

  • «Violence against women and girls with disabilities»;
  • «Violence against women and girls from socially and economically disadvantaged and marginalized communities and groups»;
  • «Mobilizing resourcesto end violence against women and girls»;
  • «Violence against refugee and migrant women and girls”
  • «Cyber violence against girls»;
  • «Violence against women and girls in emergencies»;
  • «Violence against older women»;
  • «Violence against women in rural communities».

Preferences will be given to journalistic investigations, submissions containing statistical analysis and/or infographics and other data visualization elements. Consistency in issue coverage, serial publications or special rubrics devoted to gender-based violence are welcomed.

The submissions must demonstrate professionalism corresponding fully to international journalistic standards. Authors of accepted submissions should be able to demonstrate deep knowledge and understanding of the issues associated with gender-based violence.

All submissions should be published and/or broadcasted between January 1, 2017 and December 1, 2017 in Russian, Kyrgyz or English. The duration of video and audio materials should not exceed 15 minutes. One author can submit up to 5 entries for participation in the competition. The deadline to submit applications for the competition is November 10, 2017 by 17:00.

Entries can be submitted on a CD, DVD or memory stick to the office of Crisis Center “Sezim” located at 3 Tabyshaliev street or via email to: pr@sezim.org

All entries must be marked as “Competition – Breaking silence on violence against women and girls” and include the author’s full name and contact details (phone number and e-mail address), title of the entry, name of the media outlet, circulation, number of views/shares and date of publication or broadcasting.

 Organizers reserve the right not to award prizes if the entries are deemed to be of inadequate quality and/or fail to comply with any one of the requirements set out above. The competition results will be announced on 24 November 2017.
